The Lord Todd Piping Recital Challenge is in stock in the store. Featuring Angus MacColl, P/M Gordon Walker, Roddy MacLeod and Jack Lee, this was recorded Live in Glasgow. The DVD contains over 90 minutes of material with 'off stage' footage of the pipers. Formatted for PAL & NTSC, the DVD has an 8 page booklet containing short biographies on each of the pipers. The CD contains 17 tracks running for a duration over 70 mins, packaged with a 4 page booklet. CD only is $16.95, DVD only is $19.95.

JUST IN, the 2007 World Pipe Band Championships!!! This is probably the earliest they have shipped in recent years. They are in three volumes this year, Vol 1 features the top 7 bands, Vol 2 features bands 8 - 14 and the Qualifying Heat has 13 bands, including Windsor Police (with a few of our Midwest pipers and drummers). Each volume is $16.95. We will have these at Bethlehem, as usual.
Also newly released is the last Gordon Duncan CD, Just for Gordon. These 14 tracks come from a variety of sources including BBC "Pipeline", Dunkeld Records, Festival Interceltique and the Vale of Atholl Motherwell concert from 1996. Many of the tunes are Gordon's own compositions including Andy Renwick's Ferret. Profits from the sale of this CD will got to the Gordon Duncan Memorial Trust. CD only $16.95
Also, hot off the press, is the US release of The Wind That Shakes The Barley on DVD. If you missed the very limited theatrical release of this movie this past Spring, you will want to catch it now. Centering on the Irish Civil War during the 1920-1921 period, it stars Cillian Murphy and features the Fuschia Band's own Mairtin de Cogain singing twice during the movie. This is a stunning, yet intense movie and you will want it in your collection. 127 minutes, DVD only $19.95.
Gambler's Ballet is Kila's newest venture and it's back to the old Kila ways for this one. Great trad based music, lots of wonderful rhythms and a studio version of "Her Royal Waggeldy Toes" to round it out. Always worth my time and effort, one of my favorite bands! CD only $14.95.

We have just received word that Tommy Makem, godfather of Irish Music in the US, has passed away today after a long bout with lung cancer. Our deepest sympathies go to Shane, Rory and Conor and the rest of the Makem family in this time.

Just released is Old Blind Dogs' 10th recording, Four on the Floor! On this CD, twelve tracks are being played by this amazing quartet. This CD is their first release as a quartet. Old Blind Dogs will be playing Sepember 28, 29, and 30th in Bethlehem at the Celtic Classic. CD only, $14.95.
The Unusual Suspects is a group of Scottish musicians under the direction of Corrina Hewat and David Milligan. This 22 piece "folk/celtic big band" features some of the best young musicians on the scene today including Bruce MacGregor, Catriona MacDonald, Annie Grace, Finlay MacDonald, Emily Smith and Chris Stout. Their self titled debut album is live in Scotland and is a mix of traditional and contemporary Scottish music and song. CD only, $15.95.
James Graham is a new young Gaelic singer from Lochinver and winner of the 2004 BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician award. This traditional recording, Siubhal, is James' debut, but I'm sure it won't be his last! Guest musicians include Kris Drever, James Ross, Phamie Gow and others. Just arrived is the "latest" CD by the Corries! Barrett's Privateers was the second to last release by the Corries before Roy Williamson passed away and just issued is the DOLBY Surround Sound CD of that same album. Everything has been remastered to eliminate any sound defects and to enhance to masters to Dolby quality. There is only one more CD to release and that is the last Corries album, Bonnie Blue. That is expected later in 2007. CD only $16.95

Just arrived and in stock at the store is the new solo pipe album from Peter Purvis, piper with Gaelic Storm! Highland Spirit contains 12 of the loveliest versions of hymns and airs on the bagpipes that I have ever heard. There is only one instrument on this CD and it's pipes. If you are looking for a CD of hymns on pipes, look no further. Each track is played very respectfully and will go well anywhere from your own home to the inside of a church. Among the tracks are Flowers of the Forest, Amazing Grace, Going Home, Flower of Scotland and Road to the Isles. CD only, $14.95

It's sure hard to update when you have no composer to do it with! I have one now and am slowly getting used to it! TONS of new things have arrived during the year, I won't mention all of them but I'll include some of the latest releases.
2006 World Pipe Band Championships are in stock and in the store. CDs came as Volume One and Two, $16.95 each. Qualifying Heat was not quality enough to release. The original issue of Vol One was defective, in that tracks 12 and 14 were the same! They have come out with a replacement disc and we have that in stock. However, if you did not buy your defective disc from us, we can't take your return. Take it back to where you got it and complain. All retailers were informed of this defect before receipt of shipment. We did not sell any Vol One until we received the corrected disc. All our Volume Ones are packaged with the defective disc and the correct disc. You get both those copies for the $16.95 price. Do what you want with the disc with the wrong track! DVDs also came out as Volume One and Two, same tracks as the CDs. DVDs are $24.95 each.
Leahy Live from Gatineau is the new release on DVD, with special guests Chanda Gibson-Leahy, Frank Leahy Sr, Julie Leahy and Natalie MacMaster. 20 tracks in 88 minutes plus a Special Feature that is 31 mins long and includes interviews and early videos/unseen videos. DVD $19.95. CD has only 14 tracks but they are a mix of the regular and bonus tracks of the DVD! CD is $14.95
Various Artists got together to present Gael Force - Live Concert of the Greatest Irish Artists. With introductions by emmylou Harris, the DVD features Calnnad, Chieftains, Mary Black, DeDannan, Altan, Christy Moore, Ashley MacIsaac, Nomos, and Carlos Nunez, among many others! DVD is $19.95. Also available as a 2 CD set, $15.95
Fans of Public television will recognize Tartan Roots from Tartan TV and program host Fiona Kennedy. Tartan Roots is full of practical advice on how to trace your family tree and exclusive insights from celebrities on what Scotland means to them. There is plenty of scenic Scotland featured along with songs by Fiona herself. 90 mins, DVD $19.95.
Live at the Celtic Roots Festival is a 3 volume DVD set taken from the Goderich Folk Festival in Canada. Volume One features performances by Bobby Watt (formerly of Cromdale), Mahers Bahers, Simon Mayor and Hilary James and Sean Keane. Volume Two features Nancy Kerr and James Fagan, Chanda Gibson (Leahy) and Pulse, Reid Taheny Band, Tony McManus, and Archie Fisher. Sad news to report, Gordon Duncan passed away last month, very suddenly. Our sympathies go out to his family.
Gaelic Storm DVD is in stock and in the Store, 120 minutes, is $24.95. Dubliners have a new DVD, Dublin, 50 minutes, $24.95. Watch for the new Christy Moore DVD, Dervish DVD and others, arriving over the next several weeks. We just got back from Dublin, Ireland, where we were able to hook up with another Irish Music label. Watch for the arrivals of lots of trad Irish music, some Sean Nos recordings and other CDs and DVDs.

Bad Haggis has issued Wine Dark Sea

JUST ARRIVED!!!! The 2005 World Pipe Band Championships DVD,
107 minutes of competition at Glasgow Green. Two performances
each from the top 6 bands, then single performances by the next 7
bands. This is a double sided disc, playing PAL on one side and
NTSC (what plays in the US) on the other. Just remember, if it
doesn't work, turn it over! DVD is $24.95.
Also finally here, St Laurence O'Toole Pipe Band in Concert, The Dawning of the Day. These 18 Live tracks are predominantly Irish in tradition. CD only $15.95.
New Great Big Sea is on it's way! The Hard and the Easy
has 12 tracks, all traditional, all Newfoundland!!! Official
release date in the US is October 25, so watch for it around then.
Stop into the store when you get a chance, there are several new
arrivals to look at for the holiday season. These are items we
either saw at the Celtic Trade Show last month or bought during the

New bands all around after a trip to Dayton OH for their Celtic
Fest. The Elders have come across with some nice CDs and a
DVD too. The Elders releases include American Wake, Elders Live, and Pass It On Down. CDs only are $14.95 each. their DVD is called Elders, Live at the Gem and is $19.95. It was recorded in 2005 so it's pretty current!
Dulahan also found us at Dayton and they have 2 CDs available. Dulahan and Not Against My Own
are CD only and are $14.95 each. Both Dulahan and the Elders had
really great shows and lots of audience appreciation, especially for
Dulahan's great new tune called Irish American Girls.
Family fave bands Wicked Tinkers and Off Kilter both have new CDs out!! Wicked Tinkers gives us a Whiskey Supper
which is almost live!! It'a live recording but since replacing
their horn/bodhran/didg player, the new guy had to record new tracks in
the studio! Again, the tracks are taken from various performances
at Highland Games across the US. CD only is $14.95. Off
Kilter says Kick It with their
new release. Ten tracks come from the boys in the band as well as
traditional favorites. CD only is $14.95.
Newly available to us is Barleyjuice. A fun bunch of guys with a
fun bunch of songs, including the famous Mush, Mush song of Quiet Man
fame. Choose from Barleyjuice (with Mush, Mush on it) or Another Round; CD only $14.95 each.
Mediaeval Baebes is a female vocal group accompanied by a variety of
instruments including harmonium, zither, violin, recorder, bowed
psaltry and many other instruments up to the contemporary ones. Mirabilis contains 18 tracks and they include Tam Lin and Scarborough Fayre. CD only is $16.95.
Also, sad news to report. Paddie Bell,
of the original Corries Folk Trio with Paddie Bell, passed away on
August 3, at the age of 74. Our condolences to her family and
friends.

Sad news arrived today, Martyn Bennett has passed away from cancer at age 33. This was his second bout with cancer (Hodgkin's lymphoma), he beat testicular cancer in 1993. He passed away Sunday night at the Marie Curie Hospital in Edinburgh. Our condolences to his family, including his mother folk singer Margaret Bennett.

New DVDs have arrived in the store. Dancing on Dangerous Ground
stars Jean Butler and Colin Dunne and is based on the Irish myth of
Diarmuid and Grania. DVD is 127 minutes long and is $29.95,
perfect for the holiday gift giving season! Speaking of Jean
Butler, we still have DVD copies of the Brylcreem Boys,
starring Jean, Gabriel Byrne and Angus MacFadyen, $14.95. This is
the story of an Irish POW camp during WW2 and the Allied and Axis
prisoners interned there. Daniel O'Donnell's Songs of Faith is now on DVD, approx 132 minutes for $19.95. Brian Kennedy Live in Belfast DVD has 22 tracks plus and interview with Brian, behind the scenes footage and more. Approx 130 minutes for $19.95.

Sad news for the Chicago area Irish Dancing community, Pat Roche passed away on October 24, 2004. Mr. Roche is considered by many to be the father of Irish Dancing in the Chicago area. He taught many of those that are teaching Irish Dance today.

St Thomas Episcopal School Pipe Band has a new one out called Impressions.
Wow, it's hard to believe that members of this band are under 18!
You can understand why this bunch has done so well at the World

Updated July 15, 2004 New piping books in stock are Ann Gray Music for Great Highland Bagpipes, Vol 2 and Campbell Naismith Vortex Street Collection,
$18.95 each. The Campbell Naismith is from 1996 but not many
copies of it are around. Also new from Campbell is a CD called
Choons, with 14 tracks. All it has on it are pipes and
percussion, featuring Duncan Millar and Steve Foley. CD only is
$14.95. Still in stock is his Highland Dance Beat, a CD of
highland dance practice music. CD only is $14.95.
We were finally able to get some Gan Bua
this past weekend at the Irish Heritage Fair in Chicago. This is
a really nice local band, with a great traditional sound and some very
fine vocals. They have only the one CD which is $14.95.
All you Bandleader Records fans, we are finally able to start
restocking some of their titles. Check in to see what we have on
hand.
The Corries Comedy Collection
is available now for $15.95. This contains many of their funniest
pieces including The Tortoise. Many of these tracks have not yet
been put onto CD, since the albums they were on are not yet on

very sad to say that our very dear friend and a talented musician,
David Gordon, passed away today. David had 3 tapes back in the
80's, played at many of the Scottish functions in the
Chicago/Milwaukee/Quad Cities area and often worked with Jack and I,
tending our booth whether we were there or not. The last several
years, he filled in for us at the Games in Kalamazoo, MI. For
many years before it closed, he played on Wednesday nights at the
Atlantic Restaurant in Chicago. Jack and I will miss him very
much as he was very close to our families. Our deepest sympathies
go out to his parents, John and Doreen, his son Ken and his
granchildren, Heather and John.
Updated May 24, 2004 A great loss in the Celtic Music community in the Chicago area. WDCB radio host and longtime celtic music aficionado Mike Fleischer
died suddenly on May 15. Memorial services are planned for June
12. Our deepest sympathies to his wife Mary Ellen and family.
Just arrived: Western Australia Police Pipe Band has a third CD out now, called WAPOL Live @ MPAC with 13 tracks including 9/11 and the Gael. CD only is $15.95.

Patience is a virtue when it comes to foreign CDs being released in
the US. This time it's Dervish! Their year old release
called Spirit was released in
the US yesterday!! I should have stock in another week or two,
depending on the label's stock. CD only is $14.95.
Some new items from the Midwinter Scottish and Irish Music fest in
Valley Forge PA to look into. Hannake Cassel, fiddle phenom for
Cathy Ryan Band, has released a Scottish Country Dance recording
(limited release) and also one with Laura Cortese called Halali. Cds are $14.95. Shannon and Matt Heaton, from Siucra, have a CD called Dearga, showcasing their great flute and guitar compositions. Jack has been enjoying this one alot! CD only $14.95. Searson
is that other family band from Canada. Can these girls play and
dance!! But always at one end of the stage is Dad, keeping a
watchful eye on them. They sing, they dance, they fiddle and they

a new CD from accordian god, John Whelan. He put in a surprise appearance at the fest and played with the Jimmy Kelly Band!

Also expected in September are the annual World Pipe Band Championships, again in 2 volumes. In addition to the World's this year, a recording of the Qualifying Rounds will be released. Maybe only another decade before they start releasing a volume with grades 2, 3, and 4 bands on them (you gotta have dreams, right?). Shooglenifty has brought us the Arms Dealer's Daughter, a nice return to their roots! Fortunately, Solar Shears was a freak occurrance, because this new CD brings them back to a more traditional aspect. LOTS less techno, but not totally unplugged either, they have been able to merge those sounds to a more trad base. I enjoy listening to this one! CD only $14.95.

Exciting news for Corries fans: this month marks the release of a recording featuring the Combolins, made by Roy Williamson!! Upon Roy's death in 1990, he bequeathed those combolins to David Sinton, the man who was responsible for all repairs and changes to those instruments while Roy was alive. The combolins have been silent since his death. Now, David has spent the last 2 years, working with Corries producer Allan Spence, recording a new CD featuring those instruments plus Roy's 28 string guitar. Caledonian Sunset is that instrumental release by David Sinton. Richard Kean was a find from North Texas Irish Festival in Dallas this year. Currently playing with Jiggernaut, Richard is a stunning piper. Lismor has now launched a 5-year exercise bringing the complete collection of 240 piobaireachd tutorials, from the late Pipe Major Donald MacLeod MBE, to the public. They will release these 'double CD' packs four (4) times per year for the next four years (in March and October) when the tutoring times are important to the competing pipers and learners of this area of Highland Bagpiping. It's an historic collection that will never be repeated, so collectors of pipe music should be potential buyers too. The tutorials, on pipe chanter, Canntaireachd and spoken word, have been remastered from the MacLeod family archive collection, as have the accompanying booklet notes.This is a classic series of recordings that is being released over several years. Volume One contains parts 1 & 2, Volume Two contains parts 3 & 4. Don't wait too long on these, I expect they will go quickly! CD only, $19.95 each OR both volumes for $34.95.
Sad news seems to come at this time of year. Tony Cuffe, formerly of Ossian, passed away at home on December 18, 2001 of cancer.

Davy Steele, of Battlefield Band, Coelbeg and other bands, passed away April 11, 2001. One of the earliest bands Davy performed with was Drinkers Drouth, in the early 80's. During his 5 years with the band, they released two albums, long since out of print. Arriving soon will be A Tribute, Drinkers Drouth with Davy Steele, which was compiled from the two albums, minus a few tracks. All royalties from the sale of this CD will be donated to the Marie Curie Cancer Care in appreciation of the care and support given to Davy and his family during his final illness. CD only $15.95.

Wicked Tinkers have made their way to the midwest! After running into them at the Macalester Fair in St. Paul, MN. we've been able to get their CDs. Wicked Tinkers was their first and Hammered is their second. There are 14 tracks on the first CD and 15 on the second. CD only these are $14.95 each.
Current favorite in the booth (listen carefully and you'll hear it!) is The Easy Club. Great combination of scots folk, swing, light jazz, this is a great CD. Jack Evans, Rod Paterson, Jim Sutherland, and John Martin made up the Easy Club and released this originally in 1984. It's been unavailable for a number of years and has been digitally remastered. Tunes include Easy Club Reel/Janine's Reel, Dirty Old Town (excellent version), Auld Toon Shuffle (great song) and seven more. Light, uptempo and easy to sing to!! CD only $15.95.
Robert Worrall has a new CD out, from his group Scantily Plaid! Just Checking In... is a combination of instrumental and vocal tracks on a CD that should appeal to a wide audience. The instrumentals include scottish smallpipes, border pipes, highland pipes, low 'd' whistle, harp, guitar, and a wide variety of percussion. The harpist in the group sings "gaelic". There are a two tracks which highlight this. All in all, there are 15 tracks on the cd, some traditional, some written in this new era of pipe tune writing. CD only is $14.95.
The Best of Matt McGinn is composed of 25 tracks by the man who left us too soon! Featuring The Footba' Referree, Corrie Doon, and I Have Seen the Highlands, among many others, it is a collection that every fan should have. CD only is $14.95.
Dance to the Piper is a new Highland Dance recording put out by FUSTA (Federation of United States Teachers and Adjudicators), geared to the Highland Dancer of today. Various lengths and tempos of all the major dances are included in this recording. CD only is $14.95.
John Burgess recorded two albums for Topic Records back in the 70's. King of the Highland Pipers is a compilation of those two recordings, with 18 tracks (2 pibrochs), and features an introduction and biography written by Seamus MacNeill. CD only is $14.95.
Just back from Alma Highland Games, what a soggy weekend! Seeing Western Australia Police Pipe Band was a rare treat and hearing them take the North American PipeBand Championship was something else!! Brand new from Runrig is The Stamping Ground. Listening to it while writing this, it's on the same par as Search for Angels. Contemporary, while using gaelic countermelody on some pieces. Battlefield Band's newest is called Happy Daze and features Karine Polwart who replaces Davy Steele on guitar and vocals. It's been a long time since there was a female vocal in the band and Karine pulls it off very nicely. CD is $14.95.
John Whelan has a new one called Celtic Fire and it covers a great selection of jigs, reels and waltzes. John wrote eight new tunes to go on this strictly instrumental recording. CD only $14.95
The Irish Tenors take a look at emigration with their new release Ellis Island. Seventeen tracks include Danny Boy, God Bless America, Green Fields of France and others. CD $15.95.
A great new fiddle album is by Jonny Hardie and Gavin Marwick called the Blue Lamp. It actually came out last fall and is a very nice traditional style recording, featuring fiddle, guitar and other instruments on all instrumental tracks. CD only $15.95.
Ashley MacIsaac has finally gotten back to work and has released TWO new CDs. Helter's Celtic is his new solo and is similar in style to the Hi How Are You CD from a few years ago. He has also released MacIsaac and MacIsaac with Dave MacIsaac on guitar. This one is a very traditional style recording. Both these CDs are $15.95 each.
Sharon Shannon brings us the Diamond Mountain Sessions and this has lots of backup with lots of fiddles, among other instruments. Her friends on this recording include Steve Earle, John Prine and the Hothouse Flowers. CD is $14.95.
Phil Coulter SINGS about The Songs I Loved So Well. There are 14 vocal tracks in Phil's usual style, on this new release. CD is $14.95.
Alasdair Fraser has released Legacy of the Scottish Fiddle, with Paul Machlis. 21 tracks also feature cello and bass. Now this recording says "Volume One" so maybe we'll see a second release soon to accompany this one?! CDis $14.95

Karan Casey has a new solo CD out called The Winds Begin to Sing. This is her first solo since leaving Solas and includes a few Gaelic tracks. CDis $14.95.
The Fenians, from California, have released their 4th CD, Have Fun or Get Out! This is a fun band that really knows what they are doing onstage and in their recordings. The vocalist has a great baritone voice and it gives these familiar tunes a unique quality. CD is $14.95.
One of the new Samplers out is Untamed by the Narada label. Untamed features four of the newer bands from Scotland and Ireland. Peatbog Fairies, Shooglenifty, Kila and Lunasa are the only four bands on this release, they are the "cutting edge" in Celtic Music. CD only is $14.95. The other new Sampler is Piping Up and features some of the best new pipers from North America, the UK and Australia. North Texas Irish Festival again revealed a number of new CDs. Dan Grotewohl (Chris' brother) has a fiddle album out now that is very good, traditional and lively! Bear in the Greengrass features Dan, brother Chris, Zan McLeod and Paddy League doing all instrumental pieces. A must for any fiddle fan's collection! CD is $14.95. Larry Mallette and Friends brought us Til Time is No More. Larry is one heck of a good flute player, Therese Honey (his wife) plays Harp, and they are accompanied by a variety of musicians, including a 16 year old fiddler! CDis $14.95. Spirits of the House stopped by and brought along Holland Handkerchief. Vocals, guitar, fiddle, accordian, whistle/flute and percussion figure prominently in this upbeat traditional CD. CD is $14.95. John Taylor stopped by while we were packing up (better late than never, eh?) and brought After the Dance with him. John is a great fiddle player who has worked with the likes of Ed Miller and Brian McNeill and is on Ed's latest CD. CD is $14.95.
New from Shooglenifty is Solar Shears, CD only $14.95, a definite dance music recording, but not your typical dancing! This would be great for highland or step dance groups looking for new music to choreograph to. It's a little bit techno against a Celtic background.

Also on the way is a new release from Battlefield Band. Happy Daze is CD only, $14.95, and features new singer/guitarist Karine Polwart, who replaces Davy Steele during his illness. She was on the Fall tour and very well received at Bethlehem Celtic Classic. There will also be a Spring Tour (including a stop on Prarie Home Companion) so watch your favorite music hall for a date. Sad news from the Scottish community...legendary Country Dance band leader Jimmy Shand passed away at age 92 on December 23. Also, singer Kirsty MacColl was killed in a speedboat accident on December 18. She was the daughter of Ewan MacColl as well as the original artist on the tune "They Don't Know", later made famous by Tracey Ullman on her HBO show.

We've recently acquired a couple of new bands!! The Fenians are from California and have been working their way into the Midwest. Just recently at the Fox Valley Irish Fest, they stirred up the crowd and almost sold out of CDs. There are 3 available. The Fenians Live at the Harp, A Distant City Street and the newest is the Band of Rogues, each is $14.95, CD only.
A local (for us) fave is Donnybrook, who also played to appreciative crowds at the Fox Valley Irish Fest. Their CD is You're Standing in my Light. Nice traditional recording, Jack says "it's a damn good album!". It runs the gamut from fiddle, guitar and bouzouki to piano, dumbek, uillean pipes, mandocello and whistle. CD only $14.95.

Michael McGoldrick, flutist of Capercaillie, Lunasa and Flook fame, has a new CD out that is making some noise (so to speak!). Fused is a great combination of sounds, running from traditional to contemporary. As a fan of Chuck Mangione and Manheim Steamroller, I have really enjoyed this disc! With great sadness, we report the loss of another talented figure in the celtic music industry. Frank Patterson passed away on June 10, 2000, after battling cancer. His website has more details and information on where to send condolences.

HOT HOT HOT!!! Just in stock is the new City Of Washington Pipe Band recording Scottish Rant. As you may remember, COW took First Place, Grade II, at the World Championships last August in Glasgow. Tragic News from Nova Scotia - John Morris Rankin, 40, formerly of the Rankin Family, was killed in a car accident on Sunday, January 16, 2000. The Rankin Family ceased performing together last year so that separate interests could be pursued by the family members. John Morris is survived by his wife and two children.
Runrig has released Beat the Drum, a compilation from 1998. Some Runrig hits are contained on this CD, including Loch Lomond (live), Stepping Down the Glory Road, and Flowers of the West. CD is $14.95

Jimmy Young's "Pipeworks" is truly a recording for those who love Northumbrian pipes. Jimmy, of Rua fame, is joined by Iain MacDonald, Iain MacInnes, John Martin, Billy Ross, and other members of Rua. Listen to it in the booth sometime, Jack is usually playing it! CD only $15.95.
Fresh and in stock is the newest release by Battlefield Band called "Leaving Friday Harbor". It features 11 tracks, mostly all new tunes. This one is CD ONLY, $14.95.
The McCalmans newest CD ($15.95) is called "Keepers" and showcases their usual tight harmonies! It is a keeper:)
"Timber, Timbre" is Whistlebinkies newest. They use only authentic, traditional instruments and where possible play in acoustic settings. CD only is $15.95.
Brian McNeill gives us "To Answer The Peacock". This long overdue album features Brian on most instruments, as usual! It also includes, as the final track, Brian reading the first chapter from his new book To Answer The Peacock! CD only $15.95.
Another long awaited new release is from MacUmba!! "Bruhuhaho" is easily as good as the first one. Don't pass either of them up if you really like rhythms. CD $15.95/cs $10.95
The newest gaelic compilation is from Greentrax Records. "Gaelic Women - Ar Canan 's Ar Ceol" features extensive sleeve notes both in gaelic and english as well as some of the most celebrated gaelic singers in Scotland. The likes of Catherine-Ann McPhee, Ishbell MacAskill, Karen Matheson, The MacKenzie sisters and Anne Lorne Gilles are joined by musicians William Jackson (Ossian), Malcolm Jones, Maggie MacInnes, and Tony MacManus among others. It's been a slow summer for piping releases but here are three new ones!! First, is Blue Bonnets O'er the Border by the 1st Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers. This CD features 22 tracks including Johnnie Cope, High Road to Gairloch, Scotland the Brave and many more. Second is Pipe Major's Choice, P/M Tom McAllister of Shotts and Dykehead with 12 tracks including Glendaruel Highlanders, Paddy's Leather Breeches, Cameronian Rant and others. Third is Pipe Major's Choice, P/M R.T. Shepherd of Dysart and Dundonald with 21 tracks and the likes of Train Journey North, and a hymn set. Each one of these CDs are $15.95. The biggest difference with these CDs is that the titles are listed on the back of the CD. You don't have to buy a pig in a poke, you can actually see what tunes are on there. I would suggest that every pipeband member who complains about not knowing what the tunes are on these CDs, send an email to Lismor and THANK them for putting these on the back. I have been after them for years to do this and spoke recently to Ronnie Simpson of Lismor and requested this again. I'd like to think this was all my idea, but won't take credit for it!!
Western Australia Police Pipe Band was the 1998 Grade 2 World Champion Pipe Band. Music of the Gael is their newest CD and we will have it in stock probably by the Detroit Games. Lots of tunes fill this CD, including Amazing Grace, Waltzing Matilda and the 1998 Medley, which is what won them the Championship. Not just pipe band stuff, they also incorporate guitar, keyboards, bass, congas, bongos, electronic pipes; you know, all those regular pipe band instruments! This CD is $15.95 and we are taking preorders now.
John McDermott has a new release called Remembrance which features his biggest tearjerker yet, "The Wall". Some of you may have seen him do this a cappella on PBS pledge breaks. You can't get too far from the kleenex box with this one! On CD it's $15.95.
The soundtrack for the Irish Tenors is also here, for $15.95. Featuring McDermott, Ronan Tynan and Anthony Kearns, this is another PBS treat to watch for. Danny Boy, When Irish Eyes are Smiling, Toora Loora Looral and Minstrel Boy are just some of the cherished songs on this soundtrack.
Runrig has a new one out called In Search of Angels that is just great. It features their new singer, Bruce Guthro, and shows what a good job he can do. Very reminiscent, for me, of an LA band called Matchbox 20. It is $15.95 on CD.
Time for the last update of the year! Some interesting new releases have hit the street. Isla St. Clair has come out with When the Pipers Play. With 12 vocal tracks, you will find the likes of Piper at the Alamo, Flowers of the Forest, Muir of Culloden and A Hundred Pipers, featuring a hundred pipers from all the Scottish Regiments. CD is $15.95
Speaking of Scottish Regiments, the famous Black Watch has released Ladies From Hell. This is their first recording for the Greentrax label and features a wide variety of pipe music. CD is $15.95
The Tannahill Weavers have Epona, their fourteenth recording and last of this century. It's a collection of tunes picked up by various band members, both former and current. CD is $14.95
Natalie MacMaster says My Roots are Showing with her newest release. First released in Europe this summer, I still don't know why, it is finally available here. It was a sellout at Milwaukee Irish Fest in August and it just became available in the US in November. It's typical Natalie!! CD is $15.95.
The new Solas has arrived! The third release from this hot young band is The Words That Remain and contains the work of their new accordian player, Mick McAuley (John Williams having left for other projects). Guests include Iris DeMent and Bela Fleck. CD is $14.95
Here's something for Christmas that folks have been asking for, for years. A Piping Hot Christmas has 14 holiday favorites performed on bagpipes! Tunes like Silent Night, Come All Ye Faithful, First Noel, and Jingle Bell Reggae are done by Robert Mathieson, James Ross and Graham Roy. CD is $15.95
Long awaited is the CD by accordian player Blair Douglas, from Skye. A Summer in Skye is a tremendous recording, featuring all new compositions by Blair, in both a traditional and contemporary style. We have been playing bits of it in the booth, waiting for it to arrive and it FINALLY did! I've even heard some of the Irish Dance schools using it to choreograph new pieces this summer. CD is $15.95 and one of Jack's new favorites!
Last, but not least, is the new solo effort by Cathie Ryan, formerly of Cherish the Ladies. The Music of What Happens is a nice mix of ballads and some folk rock are again heard in this CD. Guests include Gerry O'Beirne, Seamus Egan and Winifred Horan (both of Solas) and Chico Huff. This CD is $14.95.
The Corries stuff has arrived and does it look sharp!! First are the videos, all in NTSC format. Years Must Roll On features 60 minutes of performances from 1966-1987 and is in black and white as well as color. Flower of Scotland is also 60 minutes long and features selections from 6 television programs comprising their 1987 series. Included is a performance of "Flower of Scotland" at Murrayfield to stir the 1990 Grand Slam Squad. That was also the year Roy Williamson passed away. These videos are $29.95 each. Two more recordings are being added to the list. Live from Scotland, Vol 1 is now on CD and contains 11 tracks recorded in the Glasgow City Hall in 1974. The Very Best of the Corries is also available and has 18 tracks but does not contain Flower of Scotland! These CDs are $15.95 each. Last but not least is the Corries Complete Songbook, $24.95, which does contain Flower of Scotland! It features the melody line and guitar chords, plus all the verses of 62 of their most popular tunes (including two of Gayle's favorites, Portree Kid and Tiree Love Song).
Leahy is a hot, hot family group out of Canada, they were
featured performers in the GaelForce special on PBS. Everyone is
looking for them, they are here! The self-titled CD is $14.95. Also
out, featuring Leahy as well as many others, is "Brave Hearts, New
Scots Music", a sampler from Narada. CD is $14.95 and has lots of good,
good music, including some newer groups, like Skyedance, Tannas, and
Anna Murray.
